The diet opponents often stress that low carb diet cannot be considered balanced diet.
Some of the critics associated with low carb diets are:
Ketosis triggered by low carbohydrate and high protein diet can result in nausea, bad breath, accelerated calcium loss from the body and may increase risk of osteoporosis.
May produce higher than average lean tissue loss and cause feeling of weakness or faintness.
High intake of animal protein like meat and dairy product can lead to excessive production of waste products, particularly urea and place a strain on kidneys and liver.
As low carb diet is usually low in fiber, constipation may develop.
Low carbohydrate diet may result in shortfall in various nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. According to US Department of Agriculture, low-carb diet is low in vitamin A, Thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and potassium. Thus, low carb diet is usually encouraged to include the intake of additional food supplements to compensate for this shortfall.
