Atkins Low Carb Diet Overview

Atkins low carb diet is the most famous low carb diet of all.  The original Atkins low carb diet started 30 years ago.  Dr Atkins went against the healthy eating advice given by the American Dietetic Association which we should eat a diet high in carbohydrates, moderate in protein and fat. 

Dr. Atkins' diet contains 55%-65% fat (compared with normal recommendation of 30%) , less than 20% carb (normal recommendation is 50-55%), and about 25% protein (normal recommendation 15-20%).

The atkins low carb diet starts with a 14-day induction period on which you can eat all meat, fish, poultry, eggs and most cheeses, cream butter, plus small quantities of various vegetables and less than 20g of carb.  You must avoid all fruits, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables, milk and yogurt during the Atkins diet induction period.

After 14 days, you can have a slightly higher carbohydrate intake in your daily diet (15-60gram).  This is followed by lifetime weight maintenance which emphasizes on making Atkins diet a way of life.  Small amount of grains and perhaps a piece of fruit or potato, nuts and seeds are allowed in atkins low carb diet now and then.

Typical day's eating of Atkins Low Carb Diet 14-day Induction plan:

Breakfast: Ham, fried egg, decaffeinated coffee or tea, water.

Lunch: Salad, 1 tomato, chicken with olive oil dressing, water.

Evening: Prawn cocktail with lettuce and mayonnaise dressing; steak; salads with sour cream dressing; soda water.

 

Atkins Diet Promise

Average 4-12 lb of weight loss in the first 14 days. If strictly adhered to, weight loss will continue and may be rapid, slow down when ideal weight is near.

Atkins Low Carb Diet Drawback

Atkins low carb diet is not suitable for vegetarians and for anyone who enjoys fruit, vegetables and has a sweet tooth.
